Develop a Signature look!

When companies think about their own branding strategy, a critical component is their Unique Value Proposition (UVP), which simply means their point of differentiation which supports their brand promise. This is equally important when thinking of our own personal branding. What differentiates you from others? Do you have a trademark look? Something that uniquely and unequivocally defines you? Here are some ideas:

  • Something distinctive about your appearance (in my case, it’s my 6 foot frame). Or it could be a winning smile (Tom Cruise anyone?) Show stopping lips (think Scarlett Johansson), or eyes that sparkle like jewels (Elizabeth Taylor’s are famous). Continue reading

Brand “you

Major Fortune 500 Companies hire brand strategists, marketing consultants and research professionals to help them build, maintain and monitor their brand image. A company’s brand has a lot to do with its reputation, how it is perceived in the marketplace and how much cache its logo carries. Think of Nike’s “just do it” marketing campaign and what it did for the Nike brand. Get the point? In the same way, we each are our own walking advertisements, our own personal brand, which sells, markets and conveys information about our credibility, intelligence, self image, and confidence. All these factors impact our own reputation and image in the eyes of others. What does your image say about your personal brand? Hopefully you convey an image that says: "I’m trustworthy, approachable, confident, assertive, commanding, competent, intelligent…” and not “I’m dishonest, lacking in confidence, have low self esteem, incompetent, insecure…” or a host of other “image saboteurs” that can ruin your reputation and your success in the world. Your appearance and all that goes with it is the secret weapon that can enhance your personal brand. But this is only successful to the extent you make conscious choices about your image to ensure you create a credible, memorable, effective, consistent and positive personal brand. At Élan Image Management, we coach our clients by helping them asses the current state of their image and advise them on steps they can take to align their image with their goals. Typically we have them answer a few questions to get them started, such as:

  • What brand image do I want to convey?
  • Are my clothes and appearance consistent with this image?
  • If yes, what can I do to further refine my image?
  • If not, what can I do to create an image aligned with my goals?

Answering these questions is typically a defining moment for many clients and a start in a transformational image journey. Personal branding hinges upon establishing a reputation for yourself, showcasing what differentiates you from others, and conveying the unique ‘value add’ you bring to a situation. Jewelry is an expression of personal style and élan that has the distinctive power of blending art with fashion. It is a fashionista’s secret weapon.  Whether you are trying to make an impression in the boardroom or the ballroom, wearing jewelry that is the right color, style and proportion that works together with your outfit allows you to get noticed– to look glamorous and sophisticated—like the star you deserve to be in your own life. The right accessories can take an outfit from drab to fab in an instant, pulling together colors, textures, and patterns from your clothing and creating a harmonious blend that is the hallmark of a woman who looks impeccably dressed. Yes! The perfect pair of jeans exists!

Who among us has not experienced frustration trying to find a pair of jeans that just fits, far less the ‘perfect pair.’ One that does not give us “muffin top”, “whale tail” or a host of other embarrassing fashion faux pas’s. Owning multiple pairs of jeans that flatter and fit is a wardrobe ‘must have’ for contemporary women and men. You would think with the thousands of brands out there that it would not be so hard to find the perfect pair. And it has been. That is, until now. I recently stumbled across an amazing site that addresses exactly this dilemma—how to find the perfect pair of jeans? www.Zafu.com is genius. After registering (for free!) you are asked a series of intelligent survey questions that assess your fit preferences, tastes and proportions. Then Voila! The website churns out scores of jeans they rate from great to good that work for YOU! Yes that’s right, jeans tailored made to fit and flatter you the way you want them to. Continue reading

Jennifer Hudson’s triple coup (and no I’m not referring to her awards)

I was watching America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) this week (I watch it for the fashion. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) and one of the would be models said to her plus size competitor that a full figured model would never cut it in a high fashion magazine such as Vogue. She insisted it would never happen, part in strategy to undermine her competitor but also partly because I think she believed it to be true. Continue reading
