Eyes Up for Oscars: part 2

Dear Readers,

At last Sunday’s Academy awards show we saw celebrities embracing a few key trends: white and ecru were the hues of the night, asymmetrical necklines ruled,  pleating, tucking and draping were hot and we saw fewer bare necks and ears compared to season’s past—a wonderful thing! This post is a continuation of yesterday’s ‘eyes up’ post, so without further ado…

Sometimes it’s all about rocking great hair ladies. Kate Winslet is so gorgeous, truly-love her! For this year’s Oscar’s she chose to style her hair in a retro meets futuristic molded style that is so different and yet so perfect for her look last night that she reeks elegant sophistication as always. Of course her amazingly elegant and classic pewter and black Atelier Yves Saint Laurent one shoulder gown and diamond cluster earring s don’t hurt either.

Heidi Klum  went all out last night from her fuchsia pink (great color on her) asymmetrical necklined RM by Roland Mouret gown, to  her attention getting colorful, cluster drop earrings and sleek straight hair. And she doesn’t stop there—she piled it on in her  arms stacking bangles in all colors and styles. Some may think it was overkill but I love that she went over the top with it—almost in a tongue cheek way. Rock the rocks Heidi!

Jessica Biel, despite her incredibly bare chest still maintains ‘eyes up’ principles (her hair falls effortlessly on her shoulders and she is wearing fab diamond drop earrings) but because her dress was so ill fitting it took away completely from her look. The design is a disaster! And where are her feet? I am also not crazy about the white (ecru?) color hue on her at all –she fades away and for a woman so beautiful that is a crime.

I  love how Natalie Portman dresses on the red carpet—pretty, feminine dresses with unusual details and unconventional colors. Last night she wore a strapless Rodarte lilac gown and she looked good and so poised. But I wanted to see more bling. The color pops on her and she is wearing the tiniest diamond studs which help?  But her hair is pulled back and there is a lot of neck and chest  that is just so bare. And her hair and earrings aren’t really working to give us ‘eyes up’. As lovely as Natalie is, she does not stand out to me from afar on this red carpet in spite what the red carpet pundits said. Alicia Keys had a similar look and pulled it off much better.

I feel similarly about Anne Hathaway in her strapless Armani Prive-a white accented with champagne-hued pailletted creation with Swarovski crystals. Hair is pulled back (quite matronly I might add), earrings are too tiny to be statement making and all that bareness on the chest. And quite frankly, not loving the white on her at all. It just blends into her skin. Anne needs to stick to the saturated hues like reds and black which she wears so well. The fit at the bust is also not flattering especially when you see it from the side—she can do so much better.

Sarah Jessica Parker looked like a fairy princess in her light and airy haute couture gown. It was a pastel, mint green Christian Dior creation with a cinched waist and sweetheart, strapless neckline. She did not don a necklace but her hair (wavy and down) and earrings provided enough interest near her face. Plus all the embellishment above the waist worked in her favor. The dress fits her impeccably and she wore that unusual  color so well. One of my favorite looks on her.

Want to look red carpet ready without spending  a fortune? Give me a holler!

‘Eyes Up’ for Oscar

Dear Readers,

A principle I practice when accessorizing and one my client s can attest that I advocate is the concept of ‘eyes’ up. What does it mean? Essentially when pulling your look together, the goal needs to be to draw the onlooker’s eyes to your face. You absolutely want your face to be the center of attention regardless of how great your body looks because it’s your face that provides the framework for your visual impact. If your face is disappearing in your outfit, guess what?  You really won’t have ‘presence’ and you will not leave a lasting impact.

So how does a woman implement ‘eyes up’? It’s easy really—it is any tactic that allows the face to be highlighted. For maximum impact, statement making earrings or necklaces are the pièce de résistance. Other ‘eyes up’ strategies are a great hair style, stunning makeup, an embellished neckline, an amazing color on top or in a scarf, an unusual neckline—really anything that makes the neck and up the focal point.

Which is why I was so pleased to see at this year’s Academy Awards, celebrities (finally!) really taking advantage of their neck and ear real estate (so to speak) with gorgeous jewelry of all shapes, colors, styles and gems and rocking the asymmetrical draped necklines so popular this season..all which definitely pass the ‘eyes up’ test . I have to give props to some of my favs to illustrate how powerful an impact this has on the wearer.

First, Amy Adams in a drop dead, deep red, Carolina Herrera gown and a Fred Leighton necklace so stunning that I could not decide which I liked more. The necklace– a creation of colors and beading and breadth, simply beautiful. The red hue of the dress totally complements her strawberry blonde hair and skin so that in itself already has her looking great. I l love, love the bold choice to combine these two stunning pieces and you can’t help but be drawn to her face.

A more subtle implementation of ‘eyes up’ is Angelina Jolie, who’s very DNA gives her ‘eyes up’ without even trying. Yes, she is that lucky ladies. But she knows how to rock neutral colors, this time a gorgeous Elie Saab black, low dipping strapless sweetheart neckline gown which she accents with what? Emerald green drop earrings and a matching cocktail ring! So unexpected, so cool it is the perfect punctuation for her beauty. Way to go Angelina, understated while at the same time letting us all who rules the red carpet, regardless.

I really adored Taraji P Henson’s  entire look–definitely in my top 3 favorite looks of the evening. Taraji in her buttercream, frothy, Roberto Cavalli gown with train and tiers that flattered her curves and skin tone so superbly was simply sublime. She accents her gown with a beautiful flower encrusted diamond necklace, and hair and makeup so picture perfect you can’t help but root for her for that best supporting actress nomination.

Look for part two of this post tomorrow, including a few of my not so favorite looks!

A Reflection on my Own Self Image

Dear Readers,

I’ve been forced to eat a bit of humble pie lately. Me, the image consultant suddenly forced to go out of my house sans makeup and cute hair because of an accident that fractured both my wrists. Needless to say, in the first couple weeks it was all about getting through the most basic personal care tasks of the day,  so very quickly I had to get over my concern about my image. When both your hands are in splints you really have much bigger things to worry about than ‘how do I look?’ which all got me thinking about my own self image in general.  So let me back track a bit.

I’ve always cared about the way I looked, that has just been part of my DNA. I was wearing eyeliner and shadow and lip gloss in a Catholic high school in the Caribbean when such things were definitely frowned upon.  I saved up my allowance to buy not candy and other such nonsense but clothes because I hated what my Mother picked out for me. I did my own sunny blonde highlights (peroxide if you please) at 16 by pure experimentation and almost burned my hair all off. I even wore extensions in my hair at 17 (two long braids) before they were even IN and so ubiquitous! (See I was always ahead of the times).  Oh yeah, I definitely cared about my image from WAY back. By the time I got to college in the US I was definitely heading for the fashioinsta route in terms of my fashion sense—I had my own personal style and rocked it—I wore slouchy shin high boots with leg warmers and skirts. Mini skirts  with a big shirt cinched at the waist. Or the uber long skirt and sweater combo. Cool slacks with equally cool long sweaters in bright colors/patterns. I did the big hoop earrings (the bigger the better) and always a chunky necklace (folks we’re talking 80′s ok?). And I never left my dorm without makeup and my hair ‘just so’.

This is not to say I was ever superficial. I studied like crazy and graduated with a 3.8 GPA that earned me a full scholarship to attend Cambridge University. I was a  ‘deep’ thinker. I took classes in religious studies, art, psychology, literature to round out my business major and was always so curious about the motivations of people and the human mind. There have always been many facets to me, and for many years fashion and image was such a large part of me. But I never realized how passionate I was about this image business until I stumbled upon it and realized it was my dream career.

Ever since then, image, fashion, appearance, clothing, hair, makeup, accessories  and the impact of one’s whole visual package on one’s self esteem, confidence and even happiness and the need to share this reality has become my life’s mission. I don’t just talk the talk, I walk it. Which brings me back to the past 3 weeks when by dumb bad luck, my hands became disabled. My life routines and patterns were turned on their head. I still cannot comb my hair, wash my face, and shimmy into my skinny jeans without assistance. I’ve had to put vanity aside on many occasions lately and leave my house looking pretty much like a ‘hot mess’ hoping no one would recognize me because I could not do better. And it has forced me to take a step back and evaluate what my own image means to me.

It means a lot of course, this is what I do, this is my passion, and knowing I look good absolutely makes me feel good and confident. BUT…at the end of the day, behind closed doors, in my private life, I am me, unmasked, unmade-up and undone and I am so OK with that. I can look myself in the mirror this way and still think, ‘you look cute girl’, and go and make breakfast or whatever. These almost 4 weeks of seeing myself ‘in the raw’ has reinforced this perspective. Yes I care about how I look and when out and about, I am working my image for impact. But on my own time in my private space, I’m pretty content to take off my ‘image diva’ hat and be just Natalie.
