The Business of Personal Branding

What is it about Oprah, Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton, Beyonce, Martha Stewart and Jennifer Lopez that makes them stand out as unique human beings and household names right around the world? The power of personal branding; is what.  Branding yourself in the business arena is not just a competitive advantage but a necessity to compete and differentiate yourself from others.

Major Fortune 500 companies hire brand strategists, marketing consultants and research professionals to help them build, maintain and monitor their brand image. That’s how important branding is. Influential people, people who command your attention every day, like the celebrities mentioned above, employ similar tactics to make sure you continue to admire, listen and buy from them.

Whether you are a professional on the rise, a corporate executive, a creative, or an entrepreneur building a business, when you are interacting with other people in a professional context, you better believe, you too, are a brand.

What does that mean? It means you need to manage your image and make sure it is aligned with your professional goals. It means that your image is communicating important messages about you and what you stand for.  Your image, which is your most obvious business card, is a critical marketing tool and when you examine your appearance from that vantage point, it’ll make you more mindful of your brand presence.

Don’t get me wrong – putting your personal brand on show doesn’t mean ‘showing off’; consider personalities like Oprah,  Kate, Michelle, and Martha if you’ve never thought of yourself as a brand before, and think about how they constantly put their personal brand on display without the slightest hint they are doing so. There is a strategy at work even when it comes to something seemingly as straightforward as getting dressed for the day. You think Kate Middleton does not consider a variety of factors before deciding what to wear to a particular event, occasion or meeting? She has to! Whether she does it herself or hires someone to do it for her.

Make a mental list of the qualities you admire about your favorite personality and then work those qualities into your personal brand in your own individual way. Remember, YOU have complete control about how you are perceived. You can train people to think about you the way you want them to think, by projecting the image of your choosing. Think carefully about whether your personal brand is memorable, credible, relevant, authentic and consistent. These are the measures you can use to see how effective your brand is. Reinforce your strengths in every area—these will be your natural points of differentiation.

Your personal brand can be your secret weapon as you groom yourself to be the consummate business professional.  As you grow and evolve so will your personal brand, based on the solid foundations you’ve built at the start of your journey. Craft, refine and tweak it often as you come into your own.  Once you feel comfortable with your personal brand, use every opportunity that comes your way to reinforce its message. Remember that every person you interact with presents a fresh opportunity for you to put your personal brand on show.  Showcase it, and you, in the best light possible!

Sunglasses get Colorful! How to make your frames a statement piece

Rose colored glasses have nothing on this season’s sunglasses. They are brightly colored and covered with unique patterns to truly make them a standout accessory this summer. If you missed our post on Sunglasses for your Face Shape, start there. Then come on back to see how much fun you can have with color.

First, make sure your sunnies suit your style, personality and your own coloring. If the frames wash you out they are drab not fab.

Beyonce Sunglasses

The caramel colors of these sunglasses look fantastic against Beyonce’s coloring. Plus the geometric shape flatters her oval face. Every piece of this ensemble, from her hair color to the printed dress, works in harmony with these sunglasses.

Ashley Green Ombre Sunglasses
Next, look at the lens color. Ombre colored lenses, fading from dark to light, can be very enhancing on the right face. Long or heart shape faces with pointy chins wear this style perfectly. Check out Ashley Green showing us how to wear this look with style. We love her pup accessory too!

Jessica Biel Sunglasses Sienna Miller Wayfarer
Jessica Biel continues to show us how to wear ombre, but then ups the ante with a red framed aviator. Sienna Miller goes a bit bolder with a red wayfarer. Frame color really needs to compliment you. It should pop on you regardless of what you are wearing. These two lovelies show us how it’s done.

Jessica Szohr Sunglasses
To rock a pair of patterned sunglasses you really have to know your personal style. Jessica Szohr took hers to the max by mixing her black and white patterned sunnies with a red and white polka dot scarf. Very eclectic and so fun paired with her leather bomber jacket.

Katy Perry patterned sunglasses
Katy Perry went with a more subtle tortoise shell pattern that wouldn’t compete with her hair color choice.

Miranda Kerr Sunglasses

Even a leopard print gives classic sunglasses a little added style. Miranda Kerr has an easy summer vibe in her shades.

We want to hear what color or pattern you’re wearing this summer. If you stuck in basic black, maybe this post will inspire a shopping trip. A fabulous pair of shades is one of the Fastest Paths to Effortless Style. Plus they just make you feel like a million bucks!

Chic Professional Style for Summer Business Travel

Let’s face it, packing for a business trip can be stressful; especially when you have not been given a full itinerary. Add in the summer heat and finding that perfect casual yet professional vibe feels nearly impossible. Whether you are going to an outdoor networking event or a multi-day retreat, you can find that balance. We’ll show you how!

A printed wrap dress can go from casual to professional and anything in between with the swap of a jacket or cardigan. We found a DVF wrap dress with a slight cap sleeve, which means it can even be worn sans layers. Add your flats for a casual event.

Packing for a business trip - 2

When you have to attend a meeting that requires a bit more professionalism, a suit can easily be mixed in. Notice we took the jacket and pumps from the first outfit and then added a basic black pant. A pretty aqua blouse helps keep the look summery as do the neutral heels.

Packing for a business trip - 3 casual

If you get to your destination and find jeans are appropriate, you can work those into the mix as well. Pull out that short sleeve cardigan and layer it over the aqua tie neck blouse. Since you’ve already learned, right here, how well red and aqua work together. Then you have your neutral ballet flats to finish the look.

We just took 6 garments and 2 pairs of shoes and mixed and matched them into 3 pulled together outfits; admittedly throwing in a few (optional) accessories. They don’t take up that much space. See, packing for a business trip is not nearly as complicated as you thought. You’ll be prepared and professional no matter what the weekend throws at you.

Can I wear my favorite maxi dress to work?

A few weeks ago we shared our summer office dressing pet peeves. While you may or may not agree with everything, it’s Natalie’s goal to help you look polished in your work environment. This way you stand out for the right reasons. Which bring us to the question about maxi dresses.

C&C California Dress - Stripe Tie Waist MaxiWhile some women are blessed with the perfect body to pull off these lanky ensembles, they can be hard to wear. Add to that their beachy look and we just don’t find them office appropriate. This look can get sloppy so quickly and sloppy is never work appropriate.
Kate Hudson Maxi Dress

As cute as Kate Hudson looks here, it’s hard to imagine her in a business meeting. It’s important to remember not everything works in the office. Even if you look great, ask yourself if you’d really feel comfortable pitching a client in such a casual outfit.

Maxi DressYou might be thinking you can top your dress off with a cardigan or jacket. But even paired with these, the dresses tend to reveal to much. They just don’t convey the right level of professionalism.

T Tahari Adora Dress Jones New York Collection Sleeveless Crossover Wrap Dress
There are too many fantastic and professional alternatives in dresses to go so casual this summer. Both this T Tahari Adora dress and Jones New York Collection Crossover style have fantastic prints and a more professionally flattering fit.

So let’s say no to maxi dresses in the office this summer and look for chic and stylish alternatives!
