Do’s and Don’ts of Summer Dressing in the Office

Summer is almost here and some of you, we won’t name names, have a pair of flip flops or two planning to accompany you into the office. Before you don this accessory, please read our tips! It’s our goal to help you Flaunt It without losing your professional image during the work day. Let’s get ready for summer in style!

We’re going jump right into it with the flip flop issue. It’s thrown around every year and at Élan Image Management we say NO to flip flops! There are too many chic alternatives that will keep you comfortable during your commute and even during the day in the office. Many shops like DSW and Payless have very affordable ballet flats perfect for summer. Instead of getting two pairs of flip flops get a pair of ballet flats and keep your professional image intact this summer and be just as comfortable.

White House Black Market Belted Skirt White House Black Market Silk Dot-Print Skirt
The next issue is short skirts. In the winter months you may be able to get away with a slightly shorter hemline since you are most likely wearing opaque nylons. In the summer when it’s HOT, HOT, HOT it’s important to be even more mindful of our skirt lengths over bare legs. Style your summer skirts to hit at the knee if they are A line or flared or no more than an inch or two above the knee if the style is straight or pencil. Full cotton skirts will still be airy and breathe without showing off more than you bargained for.  Both of these styles are from White House Black Market. They are made of natural materials like cotton and silk and hit at the knee. Style them with a button up blouse or sophisticated shell for the office and couple with a light blazer for a more tailored look.

For more tips on finding the perfect A-line skirt read our post on the New 50′s Style Skirt.

We are not letting you off the hook until we discuss bare arms. Depending on your office a sleeveless shirt may be okay; but spaghetti straps, racer backs, one-shoulder, and strapless styles are NEVER office appropriate. Going to the gym or a cocktail party these silhouettes can be very stylish. Save them for just that and invest in professional pieces more suited to your work environment.

Ann Taylor Pleated Colorblocked Shell Ann Taylor Pleat Neck Top
This Ann Taylor Pleated Colorblocked Shell is a standout piece for the office. Sophisticated color palette can be worn with black, navy, charcoal, or white bottoms. This shell is very summery yet still covered up. A cap or short sleeve shirt is another option. This Pleat Neck Top, which comes in an assortment of colors, would look great tucked into those two knee length skirts.

Other (we hope!) obvious Don’ts for the office: shorts, distressed jeans, metallic or shiny fabrics, sheer fabrics, overly revealing necklines, exposed bra straps, logo’s Tees, any dress that can pass for a beach cover up, and any item that you don’t feel confident in if you were to bump into your company’s CEO or your most valued client.

When shopping for your summer wardrobe plan out different pieces for the workday and weekend. This time of year you will probably have a bit less crossover than in other seasons. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Another option is to walk with a light jacket so you always look like you mean business.

How to Wear the A-Line Skirt 50′s Style

This Spring we are seeing a resurgence of 50′s inspired ensembles. This is especially true in skirts. Those of you who have been following Flaunting It With The Image Diva (or read Frumpy to Fabulous: Flaunting It)  know how much we love a skirt so this season we’re THRILLED by all the options. Full, pleated, and even peplum styles play into this trend. Picking one up in a fun floral print really drives this feminine trend home! Let’s take a look at a few skirts that have that 50′s feel yet are still modern enough to wear in the office.

Elie Tahari Alexandria SkirtWe absolutely adore this floral gradient printed skirt from Elie Tahari. (Did we say ADORE!) The A-line silhouette is flattering while small pleats give it that fuller 50′s vibe.  Pair it with your favorite neutral or red hip-length blazer for an easy office ready look. This silhouette is fab for women with full thighs, a slight tummy or wider hips

Jacy Pleated Floral-Print SkirtFor a bolder look in a more casual office, check out this Jacy Printed Skirt from Nanette Lepore. The 50′s were all about color, in fact black was really only worn in the evenings. So to truly grab this trend, go bold and add some color! Remember a blazer will tone it down for the workplace. White would be a great choice to ground this look.

MARC BY MARC JACOBS Skirt - Hannah Peplum

We may not all have the hips for a peplum skirt, but for those women with more slender builds who want to add more curves, this skirt is a must try! Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt is in a comfortable Nylon and Cotton Spandex with great vintage flair. Pair it with a slim cut blouse you can tuck in. A peplum skirt can be a great way to camouflage a tummy on a woman with narrow hips.

B. Jones Style SkirtFor true vintage style we visited one of our favorite sites, Modcloth.com; where we found this adorable midi with a full pleated skirt. Pair it with an ivory or black cardigan to complete your 50′s inspired look. A skinny belt would look fantastic too. With midi skirts higher heels are a must to ensure you keep your leg line elongated.

So how are you going to create modern 50′s style for the workplace?
- Full and pleated skirts paired with blazers.
- Peplum skirts or jackets depending on what suits your body.
- Floral and kitchy prints.
- A dose of color.

Tell us!

If you’re not on board with the trend as much but like the look of a simple A Line, you must check out this classic Tallulah number from Banana Republic. The gentle A-Line and solid navy hue here flatters almost every figure. If you have a flat tummy go ahead and wear it with a top tucked in. Otherwise, you’ll want to pair it with a top un-tucked that hits right below the waist band.

We’ve seen a lot of polka dots on the runways this year. Banana Republic makes this trend understandable for everyone. Wear the Bella Pintuck Dot Blouse from work to play.

7- Try a New Silhouette!
Gap Pencil Skirt Gap Pleated Skirt
You’ve probably found silhouettes that work well for you and try to stick with them. For the New Year step out of this comfort zone and try a new silhouette. If you normally wear pencil skirts, try something full and swingy, and vice versa. Both of these skirts are from Gap and ring in under $50. That’s an affordable way to try a new silhouette.

8- Add in New Jewelry!
Hive & Honey Coin Drop Necklace
Do you have one necklace or pair of earrings you wear day in and day out? Shop a little costume jewelry and mix things up. It will give your outfits a fresh look for the New Year. Hive & Honey Coin Drop necklace dresses up basic tops. It’s available for just $26.99 on Piperlime.

9- Experiment with Layers!
Gap Knit Vest
You have your go-to blazer when you want to look professional and your favorite cardigan when you catch a chill. This year try a adding a vest into the mix. 10- Update your neutrals!
Theo by BCBGeneration Oneda by Vince Camuto
Having a good set of neutrals in your closet is important. This applies to pants, jackets, and shoes alike. Just because they’re neutral doesn’t mean they need to be basic. We also found a pair of flats with a metallic toe cap as well. Oneda by Vince Camuto are great for everyday.

How to wear the skinny belt

I have many clients who are stumped about how to incorporate belts into their look. Here are 4 great ways to incorporate the skinny belt into your ensembles (photos from instyle.com except where noted)

1)    Belted over a  cardigan –very common trend and a way to cinch a cropped cardigan without taking away from the clean lines. Victoria Beckham rocks this look with aplomb and looks tres sophisticated. The key is that the sweater is cropped and fitted and the belt the perfect accessory to finish off her look.

In the photo below Leighton Meister belts a vest over a ruffled print dress and looks amazing. She is polished, chic and trendy! Note to self, anything can be belted, jackets, cardigans or vests.

2)    Belted over a pencil skirt with top tucked in—I’m loving this look! The belt brings the whole outfit in proportion and adds focal interest. Like this ensemble from Ralph Lauren–simple yet very effective! www.ralphlauren.com

3)    Belted over a dress—a good trick is to replace belt attached to a dress with a belt of your own of higher quality/more pizzazz. Eva Mendes adds a white belt to her lavender olka dot dress and coordinates with matching white shoes and clutch for a very classic ladylike look.

I love how Camille Belle looks in this gorgeous blue dress which she smartly accessories with a ‘tough’ looking black leather belt. It works and it adds an edge to an otherwise feminine look. She nails it!

4)    Belted with jeans-to add extra flair and to keep them from riding down. Rachel Bilson looks effortlessly casual with a boyfriend jacket, white blouse, paired with a skinny jeans belted with a skinny belt!

Affordable winter clothing options for College Students

I got a question from a friend about what to buy for Winter for her college attending daughter who is in Iowa where Winters are cold and wet. Thought the questions were great for any Mom facing similar situations so will share her question and my response!

Question

Hi Natalie, I wanted to get a little advise from you about getting essentials for my daughter this fall/winter season. She has a few sweaters already, but needs to get boots and a couple coats and jackets. What do you recommend that she get that is practical but yet still stylish. I know that the girls like the tall boots, but I’ve been advised to get waterproof winter boots for her, especially for the cold, wet winters in Iowa. What about a couple cool outfits for hanging out, apart from the ones she’d use to go to classes in. I realize that winter clothing can be quite expensive too, so I’m looking for affordability.
I know you won’t steer me wrong!

The Image Diva Response

There are SO many boots to choose from this season!! Everything you can possibly want. She probably needs a waterproof pair but those come just under the knee too. They aren’t the cutest boots but they’re practical. Then you can get her a stylish option for when she’s more indoors–with a little heel and some jazz. For hanging out layering is great. Get her a few cardigans in varying lengths in fun colors to layer over fitted T’s or shirts. Banana Republic has some classic wrinkle free shirts in different colors–great for layering or stand alone. Pencil skirts are very in fashion–every girl should have one, and at her age, above the knee, maybe in corduroy. She can wear with black tights and her new cool boots.

For jackets, longer lengths are in style now like the classic blazer, but with the sleeves rolled and a more relaxed look overall. That would be great paired with jeans. Try Naturalizer for affordable boots and Banana Republic for good clothing at decent prices or New York and Company/  or Express. For more of a bargain you need to shop @ Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Burlington Coat Factory has great options for affordable coats in a variety of styles.

Flirt with a Skirt

Dear Readers,

British retailer asos makes it easy for shoppers to pull their look together. Their latest newsletter highlights one of my favorite summer trends-the skirt! From pleated, to mini, to A line to high waist to printed,  there are so many styles to choose from. Not sure what to wear to your next summer outing? Consider a cute skirt. Check out the looks www.asos.com is selling now.

Those of you who know me will attest that this time of the year I’m usually wearing a skirt or a summer dress. It’s a feminine, playful and flirty look that just screams "fun". It also temp appropriate as it  is so effortless and cool . Shorts are cute and all but past a certain age they become more problematic for most ladies to wear in a flattering way. Enter the skirt which will always have a place in your life whether you are 20 or 60.

Want to show your creative personal style? Wear a skirt in an unnusual print or color combination topped with a solid top. Want an edgier look? Then a mini skirt or high waist skirt paired with gladiator sandals and a funky top is fab. More romantic tastes? Then a flowy chiffony number gives you an etheral and very ‘soft’ vibe. You’re a classic gal down to the bone? Then a simple A line skirt paired with a lightweight twinset lets you channel your inner Jackie O.

The point is a skirt works, regardless of your style preferences or life stage. And if you have great legs, you’ll be committing a fashion crime if you don’t maximize the summer temps to showcase those gorgeous gams of yours. The Image Diva is really loving the knee length or above skirts!

The last Sew! He was Fierce!

Well it came and went—the Project Runway Season 4 finale and it ended with a bang! Three amazing shows from Rami, Jillian and Christian with Christian taking the title. I was cheering for Jillian, and honestly thought she’s win after seeing the shows. I agree her collection was a bit disjointed but I thought hers was most relatable and wearable, at least from my perspective. I loved the flippy short skirts, the funky sweaters, the cool riding jackets. I would wear all of it. The only thing I did not care for was the gold off the shoulder dress.  I liked a lot of Rami’s gowns—the last 2 so fantastic– but the pink and teal dresses were really not happening  for me. But Rami is like a craftsman with his designs. His talent is undeniable. Christian put on an exciting dramatic show and it was an amazing collection. Every look, like it or not, caught your attention. The kid is so talented. But I didn’t think he’d win because I thought so much of it was overly engineered, theatrical almost. At times I thought I was watching Chris’s collection.  I disagree with Michael Kors on the last dress– I really disliked it. But I loved his send to last look –a belted ruffled cocktail length dress in chiffon with an ombre dress. What a showstopper!!

I thought too the whole black skinny pants big ruffled belted top look in the first 5 or so models got repetitive after a while (though its a rocking look). And really, except for serious fashionistas, his look is really made for thin models. Your everyday woman, even a fashion conscious one, wouldn’t have any place to wear clothes like that. Even many celebrities, would be challenged  to carry off his designs.

But I guess, l like Tim said, in an interview, it’s really a matter of taste, “Each designer’s point of view was strong and palpable, the execution of each item in the collections was impeccable, and the styling on the runway — hair, makeup, accessories — was professional and superb. The winner was going to be a matter of taste, plain and simple.”  I think the draw for the judges towards Christians collection was the haute couture nature of it.  And I am not the only one wondering whether Victoria Beckham being the guest judge had a strong bias in his favor. In her own words she said she’d wear every piece. We know who she voted for! For me, I can imagine myself in Jillian’s clothes.

Seeing Christian practically burst into tears before they announced the winner was priceless. He really started to crack. He wanted it so bad. So when he won, I couldn’t help but feel really happy for him because I think of the 3, he REALLY needed the push financial wise and this really positions him for success—shoot he practically has an ongoing client in Mrs Beckham. I think Rami will be fine—I think it most  important to him to be able to show in Bryant Park. And Jillian will recover from the loss and get back on her feet. She is clearly talented. Some day she’ll be the star she dreams of being.

A good season and a really great Runway show by all 3!!

Spring Fashion Trends

Dear Readers,

Someone ask a question about what’s hot for Spring and decided I needed to provide a list of Spring fashion trends. So here goes!

  • Yellow will be the color of the season just like last Spring. If you’re going to buy a yellow top or dress just make sure it’s a shade of yellow that compliments you!
  • Minis will still be in style—in dresses or skirts–great for those with gorgeous gams they want to show off. For the rest of us, wear wisely.
  • Gladiator sandals, espadrilles and colorful shoes will be hot all through spring.
  • Speaking of Gladiators, the whole Grecian themed look will also be popular this season. Dresses with draping, one shoulder styles, column style dress designs all will be the style du jour. By the way, I think Rami on Project Runway is obsessed with this look but he does it so well.
  • Bright colors everywhere!! Oranges, yellows, Gecko green, teal blue and warm reds will be splashed all across racks—in clothes, handbags, shoes and accessories. Lovin it!
  • Floral prints will make a showing this Spring as every other but this trend typically does not last very long–maybe this season it will be different because there were a lot of flowers walking down runways during the Sping 2008 shows.
  • High waisted pants will still be popular but the waists’ will not be as high as this past fall (as that look flatter so few women anyway!)
  • Bows and ruffles will be en vogue too—those pretty feminine detail that is so girlie on dresses, shoes and skirts.
  • We will see more corset inspired tops and dresses this spring, a look so hot and so figure flattering. Look for lace up detailing on shirts, blouses and dresses.
  • Another figure flattering trend that will continue is the cinched waist, so ‘hourglass figure’ and so sexy. I hope this trend continues a long time!
  • And last but not least, the simple shift dresses that we started seeing in the fall will make a serious comeback in spring. Pair a cinched waist dress in a mini length in a bright citrusy color and you will be totally on trend for Spring!

Creative Layering

This just in from instyle.com: Crafty stars are layering strapless numbers over T-shirts and tanks for a style that spans the seasons. Actress Brittany Snow wore a Marciano outfit to a recent store opening: "I like this look because it’s classy and yet still casual," she said. "You can wear this to the office or a cocktail party." Says Snow, "I like mixing it up—trying something new, yet still looking put-together."

I love this creative layering and have been doing it myself and with clients. Recently I had a client wear a gold bustier 3 ways: 1) under a jacket in lieu of a camisole, 2) on its own with a skirt for an evening look with great accessories and 3) over a white shirt with jeans for a very hip/funky look. I have also done a spaghetti strap summer dress over a shirt for a transitional weather look. The key is the shirt has to be fitted for these ideas to work.

As the weather gets colder I’ve been layering long sleeve T’s under short sleeve tunic length tops, fitted jackets over shirts and even summer tanks under shirts or long sleeve T’s. Layering just takes a bit of creativity and experimentation. Check out Halle’s creative layering of two slip dresses over a cashmere sweater coat below. This is a look I would totally rock!

Jones New York’s Fall Line

Dear Readers,

I attended an event this week at Macy’s Metro Center where guests were treated to a private fashion show to introduce the fall line of the Jones New York collection. I’ve been trying to be more fiscally conservative (i.e. no gratuitous fashion splurges) but it sure was tempting to shop after watching those models sashay down the make shift runway in classic yet fashion forward ensembles. What I loved is that there were 4 models, two Missy’s and one petite and plus sized model so we really got a look at the fall fashion for woman of varying body types. I gotta say, there was a LOT of grey and this is in keeping with the color palette I’ve seen everywhere—very neutral and leaning to all shades of grey. Some other trends highlighted in the Jones NY line include:

  • Cowl neck  sweaters. I love this trend because it is flattering on most women full or small busted. And it is such an easy look to pull off, paired with jeans, a skirt  and tall boots or slacks. A great business casual alternative. Check out the look below:

Jones New York Signature Long-Sleeve Cowl-Neck Top & Printed Skirt

  • Dolman sleeves. This is also a forgiving look on most women as the  sleeves are not ‘set in’ so they can conform to your body.
  • Menswear fabric influences in everything from slacks to jackets to coats. Glen Plaid, tweed, houndstooth are all very ‘in’ for fall. In slacks and jackets the patterns are not as obvious as menswear alternatives but they are just enough to add interest to the item. The Jones collection had this bold black and white houndstooth cape that quite honestly was stunning. If you want attention, this is the type of item you need in your Fall wardrobe!
  • The trend in jeans this season is definitely leaning towards darker washes which is great because it looks less casual so the jean can really be worn in a variety of situations, from date night, errands to casual Friday’s.
  • These is a slight flirty feminine undercurrent in skirts. There was a lovely silk georgette skirt that was designed in such a way that it looked like it could have had an uneven hemline but it was in fact straight. So the effect it created in the skirt is that it flowed and moved and was just so lovely.
  • The wrap shirt. Love it!! Very flattering on many figures and Jones NY had a lovely lace print version (yellow/grey combo) that I just had to have. But it was only in Petites (thank God!) so I could not indulged though the Missy version will soon be in the stores.

One of the items I almost bought was a very classic black dress with bias cut seaming detail in the skirt. For those of you with hips like me, know that bias cut is your friend! This is the one item I actually tried on but they did not have my size. But I have been looking for a classic black dress that can be accessorized and transformed into different looks and I think this one might fit the bill. So I’m considering getting it shipped to my house from Macy’s Herald Square in NY.

All in all, a great treat, a free fashion show and an opportunity to see the Jones NY collection in a new light. I really liked what I saw. And I love that they consider Petites and Plus size. I know I’ll be recommending items from this collection to my clients.
